Where Are They Now? - Riverside Achievers - Casey Burgess
What have you been doing since graduating from Riverside GHS?
I have been out of school for 14 years now which seems like a lifetime but I have been very busy, which is great. I was on a show called Hi-5 and travelled the world and filmed numerous series which was unbelievable. I did several jobs in between and did several TV commercials – also great. I then took myself to Nashville and wrote my album, recently released called, “Room to Breathe”.
What led you to choose the career path you did?
I was always passionate about music and performing so it was inevitable.
What were the most important decisions you made along the way?
I made sacrifices. When I had an important audition I didn’t go out. I had to sacrifice the fun to put the work in. It paid off.
What personal traits contributed to your success?
I’m very outgoing but I do have a sensitive side – so I think having both of those helps being able to connect with people.
Can you share some of the highs and lows you encountered on your career path?
There are so many but I always try to focus on the positives. Working full time is hard and draining but I looked at the positive all the time and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
What advice would you give to a student considering a career in your field?
Focus on exactly what you want and work for it. Take classes, practise and get to a place where you know you have done the work. That’s all you can do. Work hard and do your best - but always enjoy what you are doing.
Anything that you would care to say to students in Year 12 preparing for their HSC?
Do the work! Don’t stress yourself however because it truly is just a start. You’ve got this!
