Learning extension and GATs

2021 Year 7 Gifted and Talented class

Riverside Girls High School is committed to supporting all students.

For the 2021 Year 7 intake, testing for the GAT class will occur on Orientation Day as a part of the day's usual activities.

A gifted and talented class in Year 7 and 8.

We offer a special Gifted and Talented class in Year 7 and 8.

This class is provided with an enriched curriculum where each student is extended in all subjects and is encouraged to use higher order thinking, creativity and inquiry based learning.

Where applicable, the curriculum will be compacted. This ensures students are not simply repeating work  they already  understand, and leaves the teacher  free to provide enriched learning  opportunities according to student need and interest.

We believe it is imperative that all students are extended. Potential has no limits. Every one of our expert teachers has completed professional learning in differentiating the curriculum to ensure our  talented students in mixed ability classes have access to an extended curriculum to meet  their needs. Understanding how to personalise learning is a priority of the school's professional  learning  program.

What are the enriched learning opportunities offered to the gifted and talented (GAT) class?

Students in our GAT class participate in a number of special  curricular programs such as;

•        Student mentors for our primary links program

•        Murder under microscope in science

•        Project based learning across different key learning areas

•        Innovations course in ICT

•        A differentiated curriculum in all subjects

Can students be moved in and out of the GAT class?

Yes, there may be small movements. Student achievement in our GAT class is reviewed during Term 4. Students may be placed on an individual learning plan for improvement if deemed necessary

Recommendations are also received from teachers regarding students who demonstrate exceptional talent across a variety of subjects in our other Year 7 classes. This may result in students being moved up in Year 8, or at another time if a place becomes available.

What happens to the GAT class after Year 8?

Years 9-10

  • There is a gifted and talented class in each core  subject. In our electives, the curriculum is differentiated to enable extended learning experiences for GAT students.

Years 11-12

  • Students choose their subjects in senior school  with the demands of the subject itself and the questioning of the teacher extend the thinkers and the curious.
