English

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

At Riverside, we believe the study of English should develop a love of literature and be both challenging and enjoyable. Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.

An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development. The skills developed in English enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to communicate with each other and to reflect on their learning.

English Initiatives

At Riverside, we have developed many initiatives to foster a love of literature and learning, and increase student engagement. These include:

  • Our annual Year 7 Shakespeare by the River performances
  • The development of a Year 7 Drama program
  • A classic literature reading group
  • Writing competitions
  • Showcases of student work
  • Debating and public speaking extra-curricular opportunities
  • Differentiated programs

Students presented to parents and students at the Gifted and Talented students Showcase.

Shakespeare by the River

Shakespeare by the River was introduced by the English faculty five years ago to allow students to engage with the works of William Shakespeare in a practical and collaborative manner. Each class in Year 7 develops a group performance based around the works of William Shakespeare to perform for an audience of family and friends.

In 2019, students performed scenes from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Twelfth Night and the sonnets.

Philosophy in Stages 5 and 6

Riverside is a pioneer in teaching Philosophy in both the junior and senior years. The course at Riverside equips students with transferable skills in critical thinking, argument and debate. Content in the course is dynamic, and is designed to enable students to engage more deeply in their study of other KLAs.

In particular, students studying in the areas of Advanced English, History, and Society and Culture will find many valuable and informative cross currents of thought within Stage 5 & 6 Philosophy. Students wishing to pursue Extension 2 English will find the unit of particular value for its theoretical exploration of key ideas that, since The Enlightenment, have influenced influential writers and artists.
